Two more big-box stores coming to Clybourn Corridor
That no-man's-land stretch of space along North Kingsbury Street near the Lincoln Park Whole Foods—that area south of North Avenue and west of Halsted Street along the Chicago River—will soon host two more big-box stores, a developer tells me.
A PetSmart and a Buy Buy Baby totaling a combined 45,000 square feet have signed leases at 1415 N. Kingsbury St.
A $14 million loan for the project closed in January, construction on the 2.3-acre site began this week and the work should be completed in October, according to Michael Drew, cofounder of Structured Development LLC.
Buy Buy Baby, a sibling store to Bed Bath & Beyond (which has a store a few blocks away on North Clybourn Avenue), currently has six suburban locations, but the 27,000-square-foot Kingsbury space will be its first city store.
“We think they'll do huge volume here, given the demographics of the area,” Mr. Drew says of the store, which sells everything from strollers to cloth diapers.
The PetSmart location will take about 18,000 square feet, which leaves 8,600 square feet of unleased space. Mr. Drew says he is in talks with a variety of apparel retailers.
The site, originally home to Bowman Dairy Co., most recently housed freight company C. H. Robinson Worldwide Inc.
